Renaming a Layer

The left side panel in the studio is where you manage and organize your project layers. Each layer in the studio acts like a separate file, and when exported, they are saved individually in a zip folder. Layers help keep different map features organized, which is especially useful when preparing for tasks like laser cutting or engraving.

You can assign specific tasks to each physical layer. For example, you might have separate digital layers for land cuts and engravings, allowing you to run multiple jobs on the same physical layer like Engrave first, Cut second. You can also add borders to frame your map layers, ensuring the pieces stay cohesive after the laser cut jobs.

In the left panel, you can add, edit, or delete layers, and hide layers to work more efficiently on specific tasks. This structure helps keep your project organized and ensures each part is processed correctly.

How to Rename a Layer in Studio

In studio, organizing and managing your layers is essential for an efficient workflow. Layers function as separate files within your project, helping you manage map features like roads, contours, or custom designs. Renaming layers not only helps maintain clarity but also improves your ability to stay organized, particularly when dealing with multiple tasks like engraving, cutting, or printing.

If you need to rename a layer to make it more descriptive or match the evolving needs of your project, follow these steps. Renaming layers allows you to quickly identify them and ensure they align with your project goals.

Step 1: Click the Three Dots Next to the Layer Name

Click on the three dots

On the left side panel of the studio, locate the layer you wish to rename. Next to the layer name, you’ll see three vertical dots, indicating a menu with more options. Click on these dots to open the options for that particular layer.

Step 2: Select "Update Included Layer Features"

Select the pencil icon

From the drop-down menu, select Rename Layer. This will open a small pop-up modal where you can change the name of the layer. Make sure the new name is descriptive and clear, so you can easily identify it later, especially if you have a large project with many layers.

Step 3: Change Layer Name

Change Layer Name

At the top of the pop-up modal, you’ll see the field with the current layer name. Simply delete the old name and enter your desired name. Be specific to ensure you don’t get confused with other layers—e.g., “Engraving Area” or “Roads Layer” rather than something generic like “Layer 1.”

Step 4: Click the Update Layer Button

After entering the new name, click the Update Layer button at the bottom of the modal. This will save the new name and update it across the studio interface. The new layer name will now appear in the left panel, making it easier to locate and manage.

By renaming layers, you keep your project organized and ensure that each layer's purpose is clearly defined. Whether you’re working with multiple map features or preparing for tasks like laser engraving or cutting, this simple step improves efficiency and clarity in your design process.
